Historic Bay City

History of Bay City

Bay City is located at the mouth of the Saginaw River and at the tip of the Saginaw Bay that then expands into Lake Huron.

Bay City's first development was the lumbering industry in the 1880's. Bay City became the central distribution point for shipping on the Great Lakes. Huge quantities of lumber floated down the Saginaw River to such an extent that there were estimated to be more sawmills in this area than any other during that era.

The city retains much of it's architecture made from that very lumber that was distributed down the water way. So, as you visit Historic Downtown Bay City, you can enjoy shopping, dining, and being entertained in the beautiful refurbished architecture that is treasured by all. You may also take a set back in time by going down Historical Center Avenue (M-25). This magnificent designated historical district is a treat to any "old house" buff. This must see Avenue dates back to the homes that the original lumber barons had built for themselves and many other fabulous structures.

Bay City played a major role in the ship building industry as well. The strongest impact was during WWII, where sub-chasers for the US and Australian Navies were produced in Bay City. Defoe Shipping also put Bay City on the map as they built massive freighters in Bay City and were then launched on the banks of the Saginaw River.Although Bay City no longer builds freighters you may enjoy their enormous spectacle as they frequently pass through downtown Bay City on the Saginaw River. A great view for sightseers visiting the Historical waterfront community of Bay City.
